A three-year letterman in both lightweight football and lacrosse, Fricke was an All-Eastern Lightweight Football League first-team quarterback in 1966, when he led Cornell to a 4-2 record and a second-place finish in the ELFL. He was the team MVP in 1966, when he threw for 1,187 yards with 17 touchdowns with only one interception. He is considered one of the top players by head coach Terry Cullen in his 43 years with the Big Red lightweights. Fricke was a midfielder in lacrosse and a three-year starter. The lacrosse team went 27-1 overall his last two seasons, going 12-0 and winning the Ivy title in 1966 and 11-1 in '67. He was an assistant coach with the freshman lacrosse team for three years while attending Cornell Law School.
