Mathers was an outstanding wrestler at Cornell during his varsity career from 1938-40. He was an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association champion at 118 and 121 pounds in his sophomore and junior years, respectively. In the latter season, Mathers was also named the tournament's [quote]Outstanding Wrestler.[quote] A broken rib during his senior campaign prevented him from being a three-time champion. The captain of the Cornell squad his senior year, Mathers had an undefeated dual meet record of 22-0. His only varsity losses came in the EIWA tournament his senior season. Mathers was named the Cornell Daily Sun's Athlete of the Year in 1940.
