He graduated as the football team's fourth all-time career rushing leader with 1,925 yards on 461 carries. Over his three-year varsity career, he had eight games with 100 or more yards rushing. He became only the fourth Cornell runner to rush for over 1,000 yards in one season when he ran for 1,097 yards his senior year. Malaga was a tri-captain and MVP of the 1988 Ivy co-championship team, which compiled an overall record of 7-2-1. He was named to the All-Ivy first team, received Associated Press All-America honorable mention and was selected as the Cornell Daily Sun Athlete of the Year for 1988-89. In addition to earning three varsity letters in football, he lettered as an outfielder with the varsity baseball team as a freshman, batting .274 for the season. The former resident of Chappaqua, N.Y., graduated from Horace Greeley High School, where he was named all-county and all-division in football.
