Roberts played polo as an undergraduate at Cornell captaining the team in 1937 when Cornell won its first Intercollegiate Polo Championship (the tourney had been in existence since '22). He coached the Cornell polo team from 1942-72, excluding the war years (1943-45). Cornell won the National Intercollegiate Polo Championship in 1955-56-58-59-61-62-63 and 66. His teams were runner-up for the title in 1957-60-64-65-67 and 70. In addition to coaching, Roberts was a professor in Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine. He chaired the campaign to raise funds to rebuild the Riding Hall and build a new stable. He coached at many polo clinics for the U.S. Polo Association and served on the Arena Rules Committee for the U.S. Polo Association, from 1960-65 when the rules were revised to their present form.
