His coaching tenure at Cornell covered six decades, beginning in 1948 when he was a graduate football assistant through his retirement in 1990. He worked with the varsity and junior varsity football staffs from 1952-58, becoming a full-time assistant in 1954. He was named the Big Red's 13th head baseball coach in 1962, after working with the varsity and freshman diamondmen from 1955-61. He directed the Cornell nines to a 29-year overall record of 541-520-11, with a 427-315-6 regular season mark against Northeastern competition. In 1977, his diamondmen were 29-15 for the most wins ever by a Cornell nine, and they won their first EIBL championship. The team was ranked third in the Northeast and 22nd nationally. Thoren was named Special Coach of the Decade by Collegiate Baseball newspaper in 1990. He was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in January 1986, and six months later he was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at Ithaca College, his alma mater. In 1978 he was honored by the ABCA for 25 years of leadership and devotion to baseball, and served as president of the EIBL coaches from 1983-90. Until 1973, Thoren's time was divided between baseball and freshman during his 15-year campaign.
