He was a specialist in the hurdles on the track team. He won the IC4A high and low hurdles in 1919 and placed second in the high hurdles in 1920. Smith was the AAU 70-yard high hurdles indoor champion in 1919 and 1920. He placed fifth in the high hurdles at the 1920 Olympic Games.
