Wood was a shot putter and discus thrower on the track teams from 1934-36. He went out for track as a sophomore after switching from crew. He won the National Junior AAU shot put championship in 1935, was second in the indoor IC4A shot, won the Ivy shot put championship, and was second in the discus. Wood set a Cornell record in the shot put in 1935 in a dual meet vs. Pennsylvania. In 1936 he won the discus in the outdoor IC4As (158-3) to set another Cornell record, and was second in the shot put. In the final tryouts for the 1936 Olympic Games, Wood placed third, but did not place in the Games. As an undergraduate he resided in Summit, N.J.
