He was rated by many as one of Cornell's finest pitchers in Cornell baseball history. He posted a 17-3 career record and only a wartime injury prevented him from a pro baseball career. He played a large role on the 1940 Eastern League championship team and was the pitching ace of the '41 team that finished second in the league. Sickles topped the EIBL in earned runs with an average of 1.09 and finished second in wins with six, with only one loss. He was named The Cornell Sun Athlete of the Year for 1940-41.
