He was president of the world's largest oil company, Standard Oil of New Jersey, and served three American presidents in special appointive positions. Yet he is remembered as much for his philanthropy as for his highly successful career. In 1918, a year after he was named president of Standard Oil, he instituted an employee benefit program that was revolutionary in its time. Teagle and his wife, Rowena, provided the funds for Cornell to build Teagle Hall, a multipurpose sports building that was dedicated in May 1954. He also served the university as an active member of the board of trustees and as a member of the executive committee of the Cornellian Council, forerunner to the Cornell Fund.
