One of the University’s all-time great contributors, he is best known for his gifts that produced Carpenter Hall and the Engineering Library. His gifts benefited many other areas, including athletics. He anonymously gave funds for the construction of Lynah Skating Rink and also contributed to the completion of the University Golf Course and the Moakley House. His connection with Jack Moakley stemmed back to his undergraduate days when he competed on the track team as a broad jumper in 1908 when Cornell won the IC4A championship. He had a very successful business career after graduating from Cornell’s College of Engineering. He worked his way up in the Du Pont company starting as treasurer of the nitrate division in Chi. He was elected president of Du Pont in 1940, the first person in the company’s history not of the Du Pont name to hold that office.
