He was one of the finest technical oarsmen in Cornell rowing history. He stroked the 1961 and 1962 varsity eight crews to a combined 8-1 record, with the '62 crew winning the Intercollegiate Rowing Association championship. He was a member of the U.S. Vesper Boat Club eight-man crew that won a gold medal at the 1964 Olympic Games. He coached crew at Columbia before moving to the Coast Guard Academy, turning that school into one of the best small college rowing forces in the nation.
