He was a Grantland Rice first-team All-America tackle on the football team in 1938. He was also named to the Associated Press All-America and All-East teams in 1938. He was selected to play in the North-South all-star game in January 1940. He was a strong performer in the hammer throw for the outdoor track team and the weight throw indoors and served as captain in 1938-39. He won the 35-pound weight throw at the 1939 indoor IC4A championships with a throw of 57-3 1/8, which was the third-best in the meet's history and also set a Cornell record. He was runner-up in the hammer throw at the Penn Relays and at the outdoor Heptagonals and placed third in that event at the IC4A championships in 1939. He was a 10th round pick by Philadelphia in the 1939 pro football draft.
