An outstanding halfback on both offense and defense, he was the football team's most versatile back from 1950-52. He was also the team's punter all three years. In 1951 he was named by the Associated Press to its All-Ivy and All-East teams and received AP All-America honorable mention honors. As a senior he was an AP honorable mention pick for All-Ivy and All-East recognition. He was the team's MVP in 1952. An excellent infielder and hitter in baseball, he batted .211 as a junior and .333 as a senior when Cornell was co-Ivy champion. A captain of both the football and baseball teams his senior year, he was the Cornell Sun's Athlete of the Year in 1953. Whelan is a native of Lynn, Mass., and a graduate of Deerfield Academy.
