Columbia, Colgate Offer Next Challenge for Field Hockey

ITHACA, N.Y.— The Cornell field hockey team looks to build upon its two-game winning streak as it hosts Columbia Saturday before paying visit to Colgate Sunday.

About Cornell

  • Caroline Ramsey leads Cornell with 14 points (6 goals, 2 assists). Ramsey's six goals are tied for second in the conference. Ramsey leads the league in defensive saves with three (all from the Syracuse game on 9/22).
  • Natalie Stone and Bridget Mahoney are in a three-way tie for second in the Ivy League in assists with 5.
  • Cornell has held opponents to just three shots or less in its last two competitions. The Big Red held Dartmouth (9/26) to just two shots, while Lock Haven (9/29) only managed to get three off.
  • Aerin Park was named Ivy League Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 27. Park faced 19 shots and recorded a career-high five saves during the Big Red's 1-0 loss to Syracuse on Wednesday, Sept. 22 (matches previous high set on 9/19/21 against Michigan).

About Columbia

  • Columbia lost its firs contest of the season Friday (Sept. 24) as it fell to #14 Harvard, 4-1.
  • Columbia is coached by Katie DeSandis. A 2013 Columbia grad, she was promoted from assistant to head coach in June of 2020 and holds a 6-1 all-time record at the helm of the Lions' program.
  • Columbia's 6-0 start the season was the best in program history. The six-game winning streak also tied the Lions' mark for longest such stretch with the program previously accomplishing the feat in 2012 and 2014.
  • The Lions are led by Kelsey Farkas (12 points) and Sophie Rockefeller (11 points). In net, Alexa Conomikes has played every minute of competition in 2021 where she holds a 1.30 GAA, 37 saves and a .804 SV% 

The Series vs. Columbia

  • Cornell holds a 10-6 all-time record against Lock Haven dating back to the first meeting on Oct. 5, 1996.
  • The last game that featured the Big Red and the Bald Eagles was a thrilling 1-0 double OT win at Marsha Dodson Field on Oct. 5, 2019 — the 23-year anniversary of the first meeting between the teams,
  • The series opened in favor of the Big Red, winning the first six contests before series became more even in 2011. The Big Red are 4-5 against the Lions since then.

About Colgate

  • The Raiders are coached by April Cornell who enters her fifth season at the helm of the program in 2021. During Cornell's tenure, the Raiders have a 13-48 record.
  • The team has struggled in 2021, being outscored 21-5 and has take only 33 shots on goal so far this year compared to its opponents who have recorded 65.
  • Ella Corbett leads Colgate with seven points (3 goals, 1 assist) and Anna Unger has played the entirety of each contest in net, racking up 42 saves on 99 shots faced for a .667 SV%.
  • The Raiders currently sit last in the Patriot League.

The Series vs. Colgate

  • Cornell holds a 25-20-3 all-time record against Colgate dating back to 1974 when the teams met for the first time. Cornell has won 10 of the last 11 meetings since 2008.
  • The last game between the teams was a 3-1 win at Marsha Dodson Field. Caroline Ramsey netted two goals and Antonia Packard scored one for the first points of her collegiate career.
  • The game against Colgate was originally scheduled to be the Big Red's season opener on Sept, 8, but due to COVID-19 concerns and safety protocols within Colgate's tier 1 personnel, the game was postponed until Oct. 3.
