Jameson Wang '25 And The Pursuit of Success

Five seconds. Each one ticked away after Jameson Wang knelt to the ground, sealing a 28-22 victory over VMI in the 2022 season opener.

Winning the first game of the season would seem like a good thing any year, but this time it meant more. Every second representing a rendition of Cornell Victorious yet to be sung by Wang and the rest of the Big Red last season.

Wang would go on to help lead Cornell football to the most wins the program has seen in over a decade and conclude the season as an All-Ivy honorable mention selection.

The now-junior quarterback looks to guide the Big Red offense to more post-game celebrations in 2023, but his journey to becoming the leader of the offense started long before setting foot on East Hill.

Inspired by his father's love for the game, Wang enrolled at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles County in the fall of 2016. It took him no time to get into the school record books, setting five single-season school records in three seasons, before he made the choice to transfer to Oaks Christian Academy for the 2019 campaign. At Oaks, Wang completed his senior season with 2,426 all-purpose yards, 23 total touchdowns, and was named the team's offensive MVP.

After high school, Wang attended the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School, getting his first taste of the post-high school in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. A school far different than that of the high schools he had attended, Wang recalled the new world he was exposed to.

“Most of the kids who go there, that’s their only way out. I remember talking to kids that would go to high school, play football, and after practice would work a graveyard shift at Whataburger until the next morning just because they had to provide money for their family,” Wang recollected. “You see all these different kids from different backgrounds who are so grateful to be there … It makes you more appreciative of life.”

In the summer of 2021, with new football and life experiences under his belt, Wang transferred to Cornell to embark on a new challenge, enrolling in the Nolan School of Hotel Administration and joining the Big Red football program. In his rookie season, Wang appeared in seven games and became the first-ever freshman to score a rushing and passing touchdown in a single game. Despite the early signs of promise, No. 1 finished the season with a 2-5 record, a record he could not accept.

“Freshman year I got my feet wet. I got to play a little and a lot of people would be satisfied with that, but I just wanted more,” Wang said. “Whatever you think is enough is never enough and you can always do more. That’s what I live by.”

For the quarterback, success starts off the field, and to be a true leader, he looks to set the example.

“It’s cool to know what my guy's favorite route is or their favorite run-block, but I want to know what your situation growing up was like…on a deeper level,” Wang said.

The idea of getting to know teammates on a personal level appears to be working for the Big Red, with Cornell hitting the .500 mark last season. Wang believes the team has even greater aspirations heading into the 2023 campaign.

“Our mission is to win an Ivy League championship. My job as a leader is to get the guys around me to really buy in and to really move this train forward. We have 18 of 22 returning starters coming back, so the experience is there."

Experience certainly headlines the Big Red's roster, and its hunger for an Ivy title would quench an over 30-year drought for the program.

“These are my brothers. I’ve known them for two, three years, and I’m going to play for them,” Wang said. "Once a team does that…the sky's the limit.”

Last season the team earned the right to sing Cornell Victorious five different times; why not aim for ten. Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick…
