Niemand-Robison Softball Field
* Niemand-Robison Softball Field Emergency Action Plan
Since its dedication on April 25, 1998, the Big Red softball team has called Niemand•Robison Field home. Few teams around the country have taken greater advantage of their home field.
Deep green AstroTurf covers the outfield area, while dark brown Astroturf paints the infield and warning track surrounds. The artificial product maintains its own root system, limiting the spray of the rubber and sand “In-Fill.” This state-of-the-art carpet allows the Big Red softball team to access Niemand*Robison Field during the weather-challenged months. The new sub-surface drainage plan will also handle just about all of Ithaca’s weather patterns. The Richard and Karen Lind sprinkler system has been modified to properly water the Marco Clay pitcher’s circle along with both bullpens.
The entire field is synthetic with the exception of the circle. Replaceable batter’s boxes and catcher’s area allow for years of use. A 40-foot netted backstop looks over the renovated facility, prepared to capture foul balls headed toward the Reis Tennis Center.
The second phase of the renovation was completed in the spring of 2016, featuring new stadium seating, new heated recessed dugouts, a new press box and a storage building. Dual batting cages complete the complex.
The complex was made possible by a lead gift from Arno Niemand ‘56 and supporting gifts from the Ellis H. Robison ‘18 Fund and the President’s Council for Cornell Women. The scoreboard was dedicated and renamed in honor of Jan Rock Zubrow ’77 during the summer of 2018.
