PROVIDENCE, RI - Freshman Ali Gombar tallied her first collegiate goal with 10 minutes remaining in the game to lead Cornell to a 2-1 win over Brown Saturday evening at Stevenson Field. The win improves Cornell to 8-4-1 and 2-4 in Ivy League play, while Brown drops to 5-7-2 and 0-4-1 in conference play.
In rainy conditions, the teams battled through a scoreless first half. Senior co-captain Sarah Olsen scored the Big Red's first goal of the game in the opening minute of the second half off an assist from freshman Shannon Fraser. It was Olsen's team-high fifth goal in the 2002 campaign. Fraser leads Cornell with 11 points on the season. Brown's Molly Cahan scored at the 67:25 mark to tie the game at 1-1. Cornell's Gombar answered the goal with one of her own in the 80th minute off a breakaway to give the Big Red a 2-1 lead and the win.
"It was a great game," said Cornell head coach Berhane Andeberhan. "Our players were tremendous. I am very proud of how they stood up and wouldn't allow the game to be taken away from us."
Cornell's Katie Thomas finished with five saves for the Big Red, while Brown junior Sarah Gervais made 12 saves for the Bears.
Cornell returns to action on Wednesday, October 30, on the road against Syracuse. The game will start at 7 p.m. The Big Red will attempt to extend its nine-game unbeaten streak in non-conference play.
