ITHACA, N.Y. - Penn sophomore Katy Cross notched her second goal of the contest with 14:11 left in regulation to break a 1-1 tie and lead the Quakers to a 2-1 victory over Cornell today at Berman Field. The loss was the first of 2002 for the Big Red, which now has a 3-1 season record with a 1-1 Ivy mark.
Junior Whitney Cale, looking for a goal in her third straight game, nearly got things started for Cornell early when she hit a ball that rolled off the far post from 15 yards away at 16:26. Penn would then regroup and take over on offense, setting up the first goal of the game from Cross at 18:59. The sophomore won a ball in the Cornell box, gathered it and ripped it past Big Red goalkeeper Katie Thomas.
The Quakers held a 8-3 shot advantage at the half, but the Big Red game out very strong in the second half and quickly tied up the contest. Cale took a pass up the left side and got open, enabling her to rip a perfect cross to junior Emily Knight, who hit a header past the reach of Quaker goalkeeper Vanessa Scotto.
The remainder of the game was very competitive, with both teams putting together solid scoring opportunities. With under 20 minutes remaining, the Quakers were able to push the ball into the Cornell zone and create some scoring opportunities. A cross to the box was tipped by Thomas and Cross picked up the deflection and hit a header that bounced off the top left corner with 17:20 remaining in regulation.
The near goal kept the Quaker offense hungry, setting up the game-winning goal three minutes later. Cross barely avoided going offside taking in a pass then dribbled around the Big Red defense, enabling her to place a shot past Thomas that hit the left corner of the net at 75:49.
In the Ivy opener for the Quakers, Scotto made four saves to help her team up its record to 4-2 on the year. Thomas made five saves in net for Cornell.
