ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell women's squash team opened up its 2003-04 season with matches against Penn and Toronto, and fell twice. The Quakers earned a 9-0 win over the Big Red, while Toronto edged the team 5-4.
In the morning, Penn ran through the competition, taking all but one match 3-0. The Big Red's Jamie Singer put up a tough fight at the No. 8 spot, forcing Missy Cosgrave to a fourth set, before falling 3-1.
In the evening's matches, Cornell claimed victories at the No. 6-9 positions. Margot Dickson claimed a 3-0 win at No. 6 over Pat Meindl, while Singer and Clarie Zipf also won 3-0, at the No. 8 and 9 spots, respectively. Anna Beavis earned a 3-1 win after dropping the first set 9-4. She rallied in the next three 9-3, 9-5 and 9-2 to earn the win.
The Big Red's Caitlin Russell and Cory Warfield had tough battles going at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, respectively, but couldn't break through in the final game, and each fell 3-2.
Cornell returns to action tomorrow, Nov. 23, when it faces Princeton at the Belking Squash Courts.
