NEW HAVEN, CT- No. 8 Penn edged out No. 6 Cornell by a score of 5-4 to finish off play at the 2004 CSA Championships taking place at Yale. Six of the nine matches went to more than three sets in a match where the victory wall anything but decisive and the teams seemed about as equally-matched as possible.
Top seeded Matt Serediak played an epic five-setter with Penn's Gilly Lane to pull out the win, while teammate William Cheng was not so fortunate in his near-comeback against Rich Repetto.
Cornell scored three of their four match wins in the middle of the order with the inspired play of Mike Delany, Matt Greenberg, and Rohit Gupta. Penn got their points from the bottom and top of the order, with the exception of Serediak's win.
The Red may want to forget this weekend ever happened, going 0-3 with a shutout to Yale and close losses to UWO and Penn. But the improvement of the team over last season is undeniable, and the future of the team is bright. Though the team effort is done for the season, Serediak and possibly others will be off to play at Nationals next week.
