ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's squash team put forth a solid effort in going 1-2 this past weekend with three matches held at Trinity College. Cornell dropped an 8-1 decision to No. 2 Trinity, rebounded with an 8-1 victory over No. 13 Bowdoin and fell 5-4 in a tightly contested match against No. 9 Bates College.
The Big Red captured wins in each of the top four spots on the ladder against Bates, Mairin Barnes dropped the first game 9-6 before rebounding for three straight wins (10-8, 9-2, 9-2) to capture a 3-1 victory over Melissa Lue Yen at No. 1, while Brooke Stetson swept past Kelsey Engman at No. 2. After Cory Warfield powered past Charlotte Gerrish 3-1, Joanna Wolfson won a 3-2 decision against Jenny Loring at No.4. Wolfson battled back from an 0-2 deficit to capture the 6-9, 2-9, 9-7, 9-2, 9-6 triumph. The Big Red was unable to match the success in the lower half of the lineup, winning just two games as Bates' depth pushed the Bobcats to victory.
Cornell earned a dominant 8-1 victory over Bowdoin, sweeping each of the eight victories from 2-9 in the lineup. Anna Beavis was especially impressive at No. 9, sweeping past Jenna Parisean 9-0, 9-0, 9-0. Allison Laycob (No. 6), Ashley Fahr (No. 7) and Claire Zipf (No. 8) lost a combined eight points in their victories.
The 10th-ranked Big Red also fought hard in the lower half of the lineup in a loss to No. 2 Trinity. The host school won each of the top five matches before Allison Laycob picked up a 3-2 win at No. 6. She rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to knock off Kim Palterman 3-9, 6-9, 9-3, 9-1, 9-6.
The Big Red will look to improve on its 3-8 record when Cornell visits No. 14 William Smith on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. in Geneva.
