Eva Dixon scored what turned out to be the game-winner in the 69th minute as the Cornell women's soccer team picked up a 3-2 victory over Lafayette on Sunday afternoon in Easton, Pa. The win is the first for the Big Red under interim head coach Gretchen Zigante.
The Big Red went ahead 2-0 in the first half on goals from Caitlin Oliver and Allison McKeown, the latter coming just 15 seconds before the end of the half. Lafayette got on the scoreboard 10 minutes into the second half as Ashley Richards tallied a goal for the Leopards.
Dixon gave the Big Red an insurance goal at the 68:54 mark of the match to put Cornell ahead, 3-1. The Big Red would need that goal, as Lafayette's Kelli McMahon scored just three minutes later, drawing the score to 3-2.
Cornell held on for the final 18 minutes to pick up the victory in its season opener. Lafayette, in its first contest of the year, fell to 0-1 with the loss.
Katrina Matlin and Jessica Lebo split time in goal for Cornell, with Lebo picking up the victory in the second half, making a pair of saves. Matlin made one save in posting a clean sheet during the first half. Mary Kate Erdman made five saves in net for Lafayette.
Cornell makes its home debut of the 2006 season on Wednesday night, hosting St. Bonaventure in a 7 p.m. contest on Berman Field in Ithaca.
