BURLINGTON, Vt. -
Dana Flanders scored his first collegiate goal, but the Cornell men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Vermont in the Smith Barney/Nike Soccer Classic on Friday afternoon in Burlington, Vt.
T.J. Gore opened the scoring for the Catamounts in the seventh minute, putting Vermont out in front for the first half. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Catamounts until the 72nd minute when Jordan Crasilneck capitalized on a Cornell turnover deep in the defending end and finishing to put Vermont up by two.
Cornell (0-2-1) didn't give up, however, as Flanders struck with just over five minutes remaining in the match. Flanders, a sophomore, turned the table on the Catamounts, forcing a Vermont turnover in their own penalty area and finishing from 10 yards out, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Vermont (2-1-2) put the game away just 14 seconds later, however, as Tyler Hasman scored on a breakaway after a long pass from Panos Georgiadis, sealing the final score at 3-1.
Cornell goalkeeper Steve Lesser took the loss, making four saves, while Roger Scully had three saves for Vermont.
Cornell closes out the tournament on Sunday, facing the University of New Hampshire in an 11:00 a.m. kick off.
