ITHACA, N.Y. -- Freshman goalkeeper
Megan Bartlett made seven saves, but the Cornell women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 contest to Yale on Saturday at Berman Field. The loss sends Cornell to 1-9-1 on the year and 0-4 in the Ivy League, while Yale improves to 7-5-1 overall and 2-2 in league action.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the 17th minute as Miyuki Hino finished home a cross from Becky Brown on the left side. Yale would take a 1-0 lead into the half, but wasted little time after the break to add to the lead as Emma Whitfield took a cross from Maggie Westfall and slotted the ball into the lower right hand corner of the goal.
It took just over seven minutes for the Big Red to fight its way back in the contest.
Cristina Law carried the ball down to the left side of the endline before cutting back and beating her defender. She then sent a perfect in-between cross in front of the goal that drew Yale goalie Ayana Sumiyasu off her line, but she couldn't get to the ball and
Brook Chang beat her to the far post to make it a 2-1 contest.
The Bulldogs kept up the offensive pressure late in the second half, but Bartlett made five of her seven saves in the second stanza, including two stellar stops to keep Cornell within striking distance.
Yale got a late insurance goal at the 87:47 mark as Whitfield and Westfall teamed up again to account for the 3-1 final. Westfall collected the ball in the center of the field, approximately 30 yards from the goal, and slotted a pass out wide to the left, where Whitfield connected to send the ball into the back of the net.
Cornell returns to action next weekend with a pair of matches, playing at Bryant in a non-league contest on Friday afternoon before battling Brown on Sunday in Providence, R.I.
