ITHACA, N.Y. - Lehigh's Danielle Fritz scored the only goal of the match as the Cornell women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 contest to the Mountain Hawks on Sunday evening at Berman Field in Ithaca. The loss drops Cornell to 1-3 on the young season, while Lehigh improves to 2-3-1 on the year.
The two teams played an even first half, feeling each other out over the first 45 minutes. In the second half, play opened up significantly as the two sides combined to put up 24 shots, with half of those going on goal.
Lehigh goalkeeper Lauren Mains nearly single-handedly kept the Mountain Hawks alive in the contest, making four saves early in the second half to keep the Big Red off the scoreboard. Twice Mains stopped Cornell freshman
Brook Chang, and once each did the goalkeeper come up with a stop on a shot to the far post by
Lena Russomagno and a header in traffic by
Cristina Law.
Shortly after stopping Chang's second attempt, the Mountain Hawks got on the scoreboard, changing the complexion of the game. Lehigh's Hannah Cochran lofted a diagonal ball across the penalty area and into the path of an oncoming Danielle Fritz, who calmly slotted the ball underneath goalkeeper
Kelly Murphy and into the far side netting with just over 20 minutes to play.
Murphy made eight saves in taking the loss in her first collegiate start, while Mains picked up nine stops in earning the win for Lehigh.
Cornell returns to action on Friday, playing host to Buffalo in a 7 p.m. contest at Berman Field.
