ITHACA, N.Y. -- A goal in each half pushed Maine past Cornell in a non-conference women's soccer contest on Sunday afternoon at Berman Field by a 2-0 score. Cornell falls to 1-4-1 on the year with the defeat, while Maine improves to 3-1-4.
Statistically, the game was even, as Cornell tallied 10 shots to Maine's 11, with the Big Red taking six corner kicks to Maine's four, but Maine was able to finish off two of their five shots on goal with Cornell coming up empty on their four shots on the goal frame.
Maine's Christine LaBelle got the Black Bears on the scoreboard in the 11th minute, making a run down the left wing to chase down a pass from Cristina Di Ielsi and struck a ball to the far post past Cornell goalkeeper
Jodi Palmer.
Palmer kept the Big Red in the game in the first half, making a pair of spectacular saves on point-blank shots to keep the margin at one, but the Black Bears added an insurance goal in the 74th minute. Following a Maine throw-in, the ball was headed into the Cornell penalty area, where Veronique Fleury cleaned up a loose ball at the near post to make the score 2-0.
Palmer finished the game with three saves, while Jasmine Phillips made four saves for the shutout victory for Maine.
Cornell returns to action on Friday, opening up Ivy League play with a 7 p.m. contest at Columbia before returning to Central New York for a contest at Colgate on Sunday.
