Women's Soccer Drops Ivy Opener At Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Freshman Brook Chang scored her second goal of the season with just under 10 minutes to play but the Cornell women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 contest to Columbia to open Ivy League play in New York, N.Y. The loss sends the Big Red to 1-5-1 on the year and 0-1 in Ivy action, while Columbia is now 5-2-1 on the year and 1-0 in Ancient Eight play.

Cornell goalkeeper Jodi Palmer picked up nine saves in the contest for the Big Red, besting her career high of eight set last week in a scoreless tie against Buffalo. Columbia goalie Rebecca Taylor picked up two stops for the Lions.

Liz Wicks got the Lions on the board in the 28th minute, cleaning up a rebound from point-blank range to give Columbia a 1-0 lead going into the half. The Lions made the score 2-0 when Sophie Reiser chipped a shot over Palmer just a minute and a half after the intermission.

Cornell was able to cut the margin in half in the 81st minute when Chang finished a corner kick at the far post, but the Lions put the game away with a third tally in the 86th minute as Ashley Mistele finished off a free kick at the Cornell back post.

The Big Red returns to Central New York for a non-conference matchup with Colgate on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Hamilton, N.Y.
