NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Yale scored two goals in the final four minutes of the match to steam a win from Cornell in an Ivy League men's soccer game on Saturday evening in New Haven, Conn. Yale's 4-3 win came after the Big Red rallied with three straight goals to claim a 3-2 second-half lead.
In the back-and-forth match, the Big Red fell behind early as Yale (4-5-3, 1-2 Ivy League) struck twice in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into the break. The Bulldogs got on the board in the 16th minute when Brad Rose took a cross from Jon Carlos and tapped the ball into the left corner of the net past Cornell goalkeeper
Scott Brody. The Bulldogs made it 2-0 20 minutes later when Andy Hackbarth's free kick from 30 yards out banked off the underside of the crossbar and into the Cornell goal.
Cornell (5-4-3, 0-1-2 Ivy League) made adjustments at halftime, including replacing Brody in goal with freshman
Rick Pflasterer, making just his second collegiate appearance. In the 58th minute, the Big Red finally broke into the scoring column as
Matt Bouraee scored his third goal of the season, collecting a long outlet pass from
Jimmy Lannon and slotting the ball into the lower left corner of the goal past Yale netminder Travis Chulik.
Nearly five minutes later, Cornell equalized the game when
Scott Caldwell sent a free kick into the penalty area that found the head of
Matt Devitt, who redirected the ball into the back of the goal. Ten minutes later, Cornell capped off the comeback with its third goal in 15 minutes, as
Nico Nissl played a ball forward to
Chase Aaronson, who chipped a shot over Chulik to give the Big Red the lead.
Momentum would swing back the other way, however, as Yale struck for two goals in the final four minutes. In the 87th minute, the Bulldogs' Milan Tica played a free kick into the penalty area, finding the head of Andy Shorten, who put the ball past Pflasterer to knot the score at three. Then, with time running down in regulation, another free kick for the Bulldogs turned into disaster for the Big Red, as a Tica's free kick was headed off the post and came off to Chris Dennan, who tapped the ball into the goal with 13 seconds left on the clock for the dramatic game-winner.
Both Brody and Pflasterer made one save in their half of action, while Chulick did not record a save on the three shots he faced for the match.
Cornell returns home on Tuesday to open up a two-game home stand. Cornell will close out the Ivy League season with a 7 p.m. match against Lafayette on Tuesday before facing Brown on Saturday at Berman Field.
