NEW HAVEN, Conn. --
Sidra Bonner scored with just over a minute left in regulation to tie the game at one and send it to overtime, but Yale struck for the game-winning goal in the extra session to pick up a 2-1 victory over the Big Red on Saturday afternoon in New Haven, Conn.
Following a scoreless first half, Yale got on the board first in the 50th minute as the Bulldogs' Miyuki Hino was fouled in the penalty area, earning a free kick. Hino's shot was partially deflected by Cornell goalkeeper
Megan Bartlett, but glanced off the goal post and into the goal for a 1-0 Yale lead.
Cornell avoided allowing the quick second goal, the problem that had plagued the Big Red in last week's loss to Harvard, and continued battling for the equalizer. With time running down in regulation, Cornell earned a corner kick, just its second of the match.
Xandra Hompe's corner kick found the head of Bonner, who nodded it into the back of the goal with 1:10 to play in regulation, sending the game into overtime.
In the extra session, Yale struck just 2:07 into the first 10 minute period, converting on a corner kick of its own. Yale's Kristen Forster worked the ball through traffic and fired a shot that beat Bartlett for the game-winner.
Bartlett finished the match with six saves, while Yale's Ayana Sumiyasu stopped two Cornell shots in the victory.
Cornell returns home next Sunday, taking on Brown in a 12 p.m. contest at Berman Field. The match against the Bears will mark the final home game for Cornell seniors
