ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's polo team extended its win streak to three games to open the season with a 17-14 win at defending national champion Virginia on Saturday afternoon. The Big Red got 11 goals from Lizzie Wisner in the victory to lead the way.

Virginia, which also opened the day unbeaten after dropping Kentucky and Connecticut to open the year, got off to a fast start with three unanswered goals, but that sprung the visitors for a quick 5-0 spurt to take the lead after the first chukker, 5-3.

The Cavaliers fought back to take a 7-6 lead before the Big Red would again make a run to take an 11-7 lead into the half. Cornell ended up choosing the wrong horses for players in the third and Virginia fought back to within one before the team get a timeout to swap horses between players. This was key, as Cornell would hold on to a two-goal lead at 14-12 headed to the fourth. In a hard fought fourth chukker, the teams traded goals with the visitors getting the last score to close out the win.

Wisner led all players with 11 goals, while Ali Hoffman picked up three, Jess Cross had one and the ponies also scored once. A penalty goal rounded out the scoring for Cornell.

The Big Red returns to action on Friday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. when it will face Harvard in Cambridge, Mass.
