ITHACA, N.Y.—The Big Red wrestling team finished in a tie for second place at the Body Bar Invitational on Saturday in Newman Arena. Junior Mack Lewnes won his third-straight title and pinned two of his opponents on his way to a win at 174 pounds. Frank Perrelli came from behind to defeat No. 10 nationally ranked Michael Martinez, 6-4, in sudden victory to bring home the title at 125 pounds.
Cornell and Maryland each notched 109 points, while Kent State won the team competition with 147.5 points. Also placing for Cornell was Mike Grey (3rd, 133), DJ Meagher (4th, 157), Steve Bosak (3rd, 184), Nate Holley (5th, 184), Cam Simaz (2nd, 197) and Taylor Moore (5th, HWT).
The second seed at 125 pounds, Perrelli finished the day with a 4-0 record to improve to 5-0 for the season. He opened his day with a 20-4 (6:55) tech fall over Clarion's Ronald Hicks and followed with two solid wins to advance to the finals. Perrelli was behind 3-1 heading into the third period of his championship bout with Martinez. The Big Red wrestler came back at the end of the period to pull ahead with his first takedown. Martinez slipped away with time running off the clock to send the match into sudden victory. Perrelli came out strong in the sudden victory round and quickly caught Martinez's legs to come away with the win.
At 133 pounds, Mike Grey won by tech fall over his first opponent. He lost in the semifinals to Buffalo's No. 20 Kevin Smith, 8-5. Grey bounced back in the consolation bracket to capture third place with a 5-3 win over No. 18 Steve Mytech of Drexel.
Junior DJ Meagher pinned Sacred Heart's Anthony Priore in 3:29 in his first bout at 157 pounds. After winning in the quarterfinals, Meagher injury defaulted out of the competition to finish in fourth place.
Lewnes earned bonus points for Cornell in three matches to charge his way into the finals. The Big Red wrestler pinned Drexel's Rob Brooks in 56 seconds, before winning by fall over Wyoming's Dallas Hintz in 1:02. Lewnes followed with a 10-2 major decision over Columbia's Jonathan Weibel in the semifinals. Lewnes faced No. 4 Mike Letts in his final bout for the second time this weekend. The Big Red wrestler once again proved dominate over the Terrapin and came away with a 6-1 decision.
Steve Bosak placed third at 184 pounds for Cornell. He opened with a 12-0 major decision over Columbia's Cary Aldrich, but he lost 11-3 in the semis to No. 5 Dustin Kilgore of Kent State. Bosak defeated Maryland's Corey Peltier, 4-2, in his third place match.
Also at 184 pounds, Nate Holley went 4-1 for the day to finish in fifth place.
At 197 pounds, No. 5 Simaz picked up two tech falls and a major decision on his way to the finals where he faced No. 3 Hudson. Taylor pinned all four of his opponents on his way to the championship bout. The senior grappler proved to hold the advantage and won a 7-2 decision.
Also at 197 pounds, George Kocher defeated No. 4 seed Adam Cogar, 2-1, and followed by pinning the No. 5 seed Alex Thomas of Clarion in 4:42. In the semifinals he faced No. 2 nationally ranked Taylor. Taylor pinned Kocher in 4:05. Kocher placed fourth after medical forfeiting his third place match.
At heavyweight, Taylor Moore opened his tournament by pinning the No. 7 seeded Matthew McLaughlin of Wyoming in 2:39. In the quarterfinals, he lost an 8-1 decision to the No. 2 seed Kyle Frey of Drexel, 8-1. In the consolation bracket, he pinned Buffalo's Robert Rhyal in 2:56 before defeating his teammate Lukasz Stala, 3-2. In his match for fifth place, Moore picked up a 3-2 decision over McLaughlin.
Cornell will break for the Thanksgiving holidays and return to action Dec. 4-5 for the Las Vegas Invitational.
