Men's Tennis Continues It's Quest for an Ivy Title With a Win Over Brown

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red men's tennis team continued it's winning ways on Saturday with a 5-2 victory over Brown, who entered the day on top of the Ivy League standings after defeating Columbia on Friday. With the victory, Cornell moves into tie with Harvard for second place in the Ivy with a 3-2 record and hands Brown it's first Ivy League defeat. The depth of the Big Red tennis team was on full display, as they were able to win the doubles point on the strength of their second and third pairing, and win singles points at positions three through six.

Jeremy Feldman and Andy Gauthier served notice that they were a force to be reckoned with, earning a decisive 8-2 victory at second doubles over Chris Lee and John Pearlman, who came into the match ranked 55th in the country.

Mirza Klis and Marc Asch would also make short work of their opponents, Kendrick Au and Charlie Posner, winning 8-4 at third doubles to secure the point for the Big Red. The victory gave Asch and Klis their second win of the weekend, and improved their season record to 10-5. With the doubles point already decided, Kyle Doppelt and Josh Goldstein fell to Noah Gardner and Sam Garland, 8-6.

Knowing that they needed three singles victories to secure the match, the Big Red came out firing. Led by John Fife's 6-0 first set win third singles, Cornell was able to win four of six first sets, a foreshadowing of the final result. Playing some of his best tennis of the season, Fife was also the first Big Red player to finish his match, dispatching a very tough Nate Gorham 6-0, 6-4.

Brown fought back, and the Bears were able to pull within one when Jon Pearlman defeated Jon Jaklitsch 6-1, 6-1 at first singles.

However, Cornell wasted no time in answering back, relying once again on the back of their lineup. Andy Gauthier, who was pitted against Kendrick Au, was able to win yet again at the sixth position, 6-4, 6-4. After riding an early break of serve to a first set win, Gauthier and Au would trade blows in the second. Sitting at 4-4 and on serve, Gauthier was able to capture an important break, and then serve out the match. With the victory, Gauthier improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season when slotted at sixth.

Brown once again pulled the match within one with a hard-fought victory at second singles. After falling behind early 3-0 in the first set and never being able to gain ground, Goldstein battled back in the second set, showing his trademark grit. Goldstein would lead 4-3, but ultimately couldn't hang on, and fell to Chris Lee 6-3, 6-4.

Once again, the Big Red would quickly shut the door on any glimmer of hope for Brown, with Marc Asch winning the decisive match at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-3, and picking up his second singles victory of the weekend. Asch was able to run out to a quick 4-1 lead in the second, but was then pushed hard by Noah Gardner. On match point, after an incredible rally, Asch hit a beautiful topspin lob winner to seal the victory for the Big Red and keep their Ivy League title hopes alive. Asch continues to impress during his senior campaign, remaining undefeated at fifth singles (7-0) and also raising his season record to an astounding 14-1 in singles play.

For the second time in as many days, Jeremy Feldman would find himself as the last Cornell player on the courts. This time, his hard work would not go unrewarded, as he was able to pick up his 11th singles  victory of the season with a tight win over Sam Garland at fourth singles. The match was an emotional roller-coaster, with Feldman falling behind 1-2 early in the first set before winning four straight games and capturing the first set 6-4. Feldman would then take an early break in the second set, going up 3-1, but couldn't hold, and would drop five of the next six games to lose the second, 6-4. As if there was any doubt that these two players were very evenly matched, the two would play a ultra-competitive super-tiebreak. Feldman would prevail, 10-8, and cap Cornell's extraordinary weekend on a high note.

The Big Red tennis team next takes to the court next Friday, April 17th at the Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, New York. The match against Princeton is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
