ITHACA, N.Y. -- Freshmen Hannah Labadie and Maneesha Chitanvis scored their first career goals as the Cornell women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 victory over Colgate on Wednesday night at Berman Field. The Big Red improves to 1-3-1 on the year, while Colgate falls to 1-4-2.

In the buildup to this week's games, Cornell head coach Danielle LaRoche spoke of the team's progress from game to game, improving one facet of the game at a time. On Wednesday night, that effort paid off as the Big Red put together a complete game to pick up its first victory and second shutout of the year.

Labadie got the Big Red on the board in the 12th minute of the game as she combined with sophomore Brook Chang though the middle of the field. Chang played a ball toward the left corner that Labadie ran onto and hit a high, looping shot over Colgate goalkeeper Ashley Walsh and into the side netting on the far side, staking Cornell to its first lead of the season.

The half ended with the Big Red ahead, 1-0, after Walsh made three saves and Cornell goalkeeper Kelly Murphy made one. Cornell then added an insurance goal in the 55th minute with Chitanvis' first goal of her career.

Cornell sophomore Sam Wright opened the play by playing a ball from midfield over the Colgate back line that Chitanvis ran onto. The freshman then dribbled around Walsh and knocked the ball into the open goal for the 2-0 lead, as that would hold up for the final score.

Murphy made just the one save in picking up her second shutout of the year and third of her career. Walsh made five saves in taking the loss for the Raiders.

The Big Red returns to action on Friday, taking on William & Mary in the opening game of the George Mason Tournament in Fairfax, Va. Cornell will then face the host Patriots on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
