FAIRFAX, Va. -- Facing one of the nation's top programs, the Cornell women's soccer team gave William & Mary all it could handle for a full 90 minutes, losing a heartbreaking 1-0 contest to the Tribe in the opening game of the George Mason Tournament in Fairfax, Va.

William & Mary, which received votes in this week's NSCAA national poll, could only manage a second half goal, finally breaking through the Cornell defense with a goal in the 62nd minute to claim the victory. Krissy Vornadore scored the game's only goal, hitting a ball from the left side to the far post of Cornell's goal, where it glanced off defender Sidra Bonner and into the goal.

Cornell, which had just played two days ago in a 2-0 victory over Colgate before making the lengthy drive to northern Virginia, kept pace with the Tribe, which narrowly out-shot the Big Red, 14-11. Cornell goalkeeper Kelly Murphy made six saves to keep the Big Red in the contest, while Tribe netminder Grace Barnard picked up three saves in taking the victory.

With the loss, Cornell falls to 1-4-1 on the year, while William & Mary improves to 5-2 on the season.

The Big Red returns to action on Sunday, playing the host Patriots in a 2:30 p.m. contest in Fairfax, Va.
