ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Murphy made six saves for her second career shutout as the Cornell women's soccer team opened the 2009 campaign with a scoreless tie against Binghamton on Friday night at Berman Field. The Big Red is now 0-0-1 on the year, while Binghamton picks up its first tie to go along with two losses.

The Big Red needed the first 45 minutes to get their legs into the season opener, as Cornell was out-shot by a 4-1 margin in the first half, with Cornell's lone shot coming in the final five minutes of the period. Cornell came out fired up in the second half, getting off 15 shots and putting four of them on the goal frame, only to be turned aside by Binghamton goalkeeper Erin Iman. Cornell also earned all seven of its corner kicks in the second 45 minutes and had a header by freshman Maneesha Chitanvis ring off the crossbar.

Iman picked up five saves in the second half and the two overtime periods for the Bearcats. Jen McEachron got the start but was not needed to make a save in the first half.

Friday night's match marked the first collegiate start for freshman Jayann Gabrio, while classmates Hannah Labadie, Megan Crowell, Xandra Hompe and Chitanvis each made their collegiate debut. The Big Red opened up the season with a tie for the first time since the 2004 season, when it also earned a scoreless draw against Stony Brook.

The Big Red returns to action on Sunday when it takes to the road for the first time in 2009, traveling to Niagara for a 3 p.m. contest.
