Wrestling Avenges Early Season Loss By Downing Maryland 19-15 at the National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—The Big Red wrestling team avenged its first loss of the season on Sunday morning when it defeated Maryland, 19-15, at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. Junior Mike Grey turned he tables on seventh-ranked Steve Bell at 133 pounds to win by major decision earning valuable bonus points for the Big Red. Cornell also picked up wins by Frank Perrelli (125), Kyle Dake (141), Corey Manson (149), Mack Lewnes (174) and Steve Bosak (184). Cornell will wrestle third-seeded Boise State for fifth place at 1 p.m. CT this afternoon.

At 125 pounds, Perrelli faced off against James Knox for the second time this season and walked away with his second victory. After a scoreless first period, Knox chose to start the second in the down position. Perrelli racked up two back points before Knox was able to escape. Perrelli earned a takedown and two more back points to take a 6-1 lead into the third. Perrelli chose to start the third at neutral looking for a major decision. He earned another takedown, but time ran out, and Perrelli walked away with a 9-3 decision.

No. 7 Steve Bell edged out No. 10 Grey by a 4-3 decision in the Big Red's first dual of the season, but Grey hit the mat on Sunday looking for the win. At first whistle Grey went on the offense, and Bell was given a stalling warning early in the period. Grey took down his opponent and racked up over a minute and a half of riding time before the period was over. Grey chose to start the second period down and quickly escaped. Bell shot in at Grey, but the Big Red wrestler countered and circled for a takedown. Grey earned two back points to take a 7-0 lead. Bell chose neutral in the third and made a shot, but Grey once again countered for a takedown of his own. With riding time locked up for Grey, Bell escaped and caught Grey for his first takedown of the bout. Grey escaped with a little under 30 seconds left in the match and with riding time won an 11-3 decision.

At 141 pounds, No. 5 Dake faced off against No. 3 Alex Krum. Krum shot in early at Dake and caught him to earn two very quick back points to take a 4-0 lead into the second period. Krum chose to start the second in the down position, and he fought to his feet a few times but was unable to escape. Dake started the third down and earned his first point of the match when Krum was hit with his second stalling call. Dake earned the reversal to come within a point of his opponent. Krum was his with his third stalling call to tie the match at 4-4, and with riding time Dake earned a 5-4 decision. Cornell led Maryland, 10-0.

At 149 pounds, Cornell's Corey Manson made two takedowns in the first period to take a 4-1 lead over Jon Kohler. Manson escaped from his opening down position, but Kohler would get a takedown. The Big Red wrestler escaped and grabbed another takedown to hold an 8-3 advantage. Kohler escaped from his opening down position in the third, but Manson would hold his lead to grab an 8-4 decision.

At 157 pounds, John Basting hit the mat against the Terrapins Kyle John. John had a 2-0 lead into the second with a takedown. John chose down in the second and escaped. Basting grabbed his first points of the bout with a takedown of his own and rode out his opponent for the rest of the period. Basting escaped from his opening down position in the third to be down by a point, 4-3. Basting took a shot at John looking to take the lead, but John countered for a takedown to win a 6-3 decision.

No. 12 Justin Kerber faced No. 20 John Asper of Maryland at 165. Asper earned four takedowns and with riding time, won a 9-4 decision over Kerber.

At 174 pounds, No. 2 Lewnes faced No. 10 Mike Letts for the third time this season. Lewnes continued to wrestle in his dominating fashion by earning a takedown less than a minute into the bout. Letts would escape, but Lewnes would grab two more points with a takedown before the end of the first. Letts chose to start the second down on the mat and escaped, but Lewnes made his third takedown with less than 10 seconds left on the clock. Lewnes chose to start the third period from the down position and quickly escaped. Lewnes was looking for the major decision and almost had another takedown but time ran out. With riding time, Lewnes won an 8-2 decision to give the Big Red a 16-6 team lead.

No. 14 ranked Bosak squared off against Corey Peltier at 184 pounds. Bosak earned the only points of the first period with a takedown. Bosak chose to start the second down on the mat and went up 6-0 with a reversal and two back points. Before the period was over, the two wrestlers each traded another reversal to give Bosak an 8-2 advantage heading into the third. Peltier escaped from his starting down position in the third, and escaped. With riding time, Bosak won a 9-3 decision to lock up a team win for the Big Red.

At 197 pounds, Cornell's George Kocher wrestled in his first dual for the Big Red against No. 5 Hudson Taylor. Taylor had a 5-1 lead over Kocher in the second before he caught the Big Red wrestler and pinned him in 4:42.

At heavyweight, Maryland's Pat Gilmore had a 2-1 lead going into the second after a takedown from which Josh Arnone escaped. Arnone started the second in the down position, and Gilmore tilted him to earn three back points. Gilmore escaped from his opening down position in the third and with riding time won a 7-1 decision.

No. 6 seeded Cornell will wrestle third-seeded Boise State at 1 p.m. CT for fifth place.
