Wrestling Drops 27-14 Match to No. 3 Ohio State at National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—The Big Red wrestling team fell to the No. 3 seeded Ohio State, 27-14, in the quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at the National Duals. At 141 pounds, fifth-ranked Kyle Dake upset No. 1 Reece Humprey by a score of 8-4. Mike Grey and Cam Simaz both earned major decisions over their opponents at 133 and 197 pounds, respectively. Junior Mack Lewnes picked up his second win of the day at 174 pounds.

At 125 pounds, Frank Perrelli was leading Nikko Triggas heading into the second period. Perrelli started in the down position and Triggas immediately started working him to his back. Triggas caught him and pinned Perrelli in 3:35 to give Ohio State a quick 6-0 lead.

At 133 pounds, No. 10 Mike Grey took on Ian Paddock. Grey immediately attacked his opponent and came away with a takedown. Paddock twisted out for an escape, but Grey attacked right back with a low single and converted to a double to finish his second takedown. Paddock escaped again, and Grey earned another takedown with 45 seconds left. Grey chose down to start the second and quickly worked his way to neutral. Grey circled his opponent for another takedown and rode him out for the remainder of the period. Grey let Paddock up from his starting down position in the third looking for points. The Big Red wrestler racked up takedowns on his way to a 19-6 major decision.

At 141 pounds, No. 5 Dake faced No. 1 ranked Humphrey. Humphrey caught Dake's leg quickly and Dake was almost able to pull himself free. Humphrey continued his hold on the Cornell wrestler until he earned the takedown. Dake quickly escaped, and he almost earned a takedown but Humphrey pulled out of bounds. Humphrey chose to start the second down, but Dake controlled the entire period not allowing him to escape. Dake started the third down, and Humphrey let him up. Dake grabbed hold of Humphrey's leg and brought him down to the mat to take a 5-3 lead. Humphrey tried to get up, but Dake continuously brought him back to the mat. Dake was awarded a point when Humphrey received his third caution warning. Humphrey escaped, but Dake brought his opponent down another time and with riding time locked up, Dake earned an 8-4 decision. With the three-point decision, Cornell took a 7-6 lead over the Buckeyes.

The Buckeyes changed gears looking to score valuable team points. No. 3 ranked Lance Palmer started the attack for Ohio State with a 10-2 major decision over Corey Manson at 149 pounds. Tony Jameson followed with bonus points for the Buckeyes by pinning John Basting in 3:22. At 165 pounds, No. 8 Colt Sponseller grabbed a 12-4 major decision over No. 12 Justin Kerber to give Ohio State a 20-7 lead.

At 174 pounds, No. 2 Lewnes was scoreless after the first against No. 14 Dave Rella. Rella scored the first point of the match with an escape from his opening down position. Lewnes grabbed hold of Rella's leg, and the Buckeye wrestler tried to get off the mat. Lewnes drug him back in to secure a takedown. Rella shook Lewnes loose, but the Big Red wrestler earned another takedown to take a 5-2 lead. Lewnes quickly escaped from his opening down position in the third. Lewnes grabbed two more takedowns and with riding time won a 10-4 decision.

Ohio State sealed its team win with a major decision by No. 7 Mike Pucillo over No. 14 Steve Bosak, 13-1, to give the Buckeyes a 24-10 lead.

At 197 pounds, Simaz jumped out fast against Cody Magrum. Simaz made a quick takedown and looked to use his opponent's leg to turn him to his back. The referee called the action back to center, and Simaz continued to dominate his opponent for the remainder of the period. Simaz racked up points throughout the rest of the match to win a 14-4 major decision.

At heavyweight, Ohio State's Corey Morrison won a 5-2 decision over Josh Arnone.

Cornell moves to the wrestlebacks where it faces Missouri at 5 p.m. CT.
