CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—
The Big Red wrestling team opened the 2010 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals with a 24-11 victory over Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon. Cornell won seven out of 10 matches with junior Mack Lewnes winning by fall at 174 pounds to pick up bonus points for the Big Red. With the win, Cornell advances to the quarterfinals where it will face No. 3 seeded Ohio State at 3 p.m. CT.

At 125 pounds, Frank Perrelli opened the day off for the Big Red facing Wisconsin's Drew Hammen for the second time this season. The Big Red wrestler won a 3-2 decision over the Badger at the Las Vegas Invitational in December. Perrelli earned a takedown each period, and with 2:34 in riding time, won a 7-2 decision to put the Big Red up, 3-0.

The Big Red's No. 10 ranked Mike Grey took on No. 6 Tyler Graff at 133 pounds. Grey went up 2-0 with a takedown in the first period and rode out his opponent for the remainder. Grey chose to start the second in the bottom position and earned an escape and another takedown. Graff chose to start the third at neutral and evaded Grey for the entire two minutes. With 1:30 in riding time, Grey won a 6-0 decision.

No. 5 ranked Kyle Dake picked up three more team points for the Big Red with a 7-0 decision over Cole Schmitt. Dake earned a takedown and grabbed three back points in the first period to go up 5-0. Schmitt chose down in the second period, but he was unable to escape from Dake's clutches. Dake chose neutral in the third looking to pick up a major decision, but Schmitt kept the period scoreless. Dake added his seventh point with 4:44 in riding time.

Wisconsin picked up its first points of the dual with No. 2 Kyle Ruschell's 9-0 major decision over Corey Manson at 149 pounds.

At 157 pounds, Cornell's John Basting and Greg Burke were scoreless heading into the third period. Basting earned the first point of the bout when Burke was hit with his second stalling warning. Basting then escaped from his opening down position, and with 1:41 in riding time, won a 3-0 decision to put the Big Red up, 12-4.

The Badgers grabbed another four team points when No. 1 Andrew Howe won a 12-4 major decision over No. 12 Justin Kerber at 165 pounds.

At 174, No. 2 ranked Lewnes faced Wisconsin's Jimmy Duffy. Lewnes was up 5-0 in the second period with a takedown and a nearfall. Lewnes caught his opponent for another takedown and turned him to his back to pick up the pin in 4:27. With 35 wins by fall, Lewnes only needs two more pins to tie All-American Steve Anceravage's career record of 37.

At 184 pounds, No. 14 Steve Bosak was narrowly inched out by Wisconsin's Travis Rutt by an 8-7 decision.

No. 7 Cam Simaz was on his game against No.10 Trevor Brandvold at 197 pounds. Simaz earned four takedowns and didn't allow Brandvold a single takedown in his 10-5 victory to seal the Big Red's dual win.

At heavyweight, Cornell's Josh Arnone was scoreless against Eric Bugenhagen after the first period. Bugenhagen chose to start the second down and earned the only point of the period with an escape. Arnone tied the match up at 1-1 in the third with his opening escape about 20 seconds into the period. The two remained deadlocked until with about 30 seconds left on the clock Arnone made his move to earn a takedown with a double leg. With time running out, Bugenhagen would escape, but Arnone walked away with a 3-2 decision.

The No. 6 seeded Big Red will face No. 3 Ohio State in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m. CT. Ohio State advanced with a 32-7 win over Arizona State this afternoon.
