ITHACA, N.Y. -- Despite the largest attendance to see a Cornell men's soccer game at Berman Field, the Big Red dropped a 1-0 contest to Yale on Saturday night. A total of 961 fans turned out to see the contest, with Yale taking a first-half lead and holding on to the victory to send Cornell to 4-4-4 on the year and 0-2-1 in the Ivy League.
Yale (2-9-1, 1-2 Ivy League) got the game's only goal from Andy Shorten at the 36:43 mark of the match, taking a pass from Chris Dennan and lofting a shot from 15 yards out to the side of the goal to the right of Cornell netminder
Rick Pflasterer. Shorten's shot banked off the far post and into the goal for what turned out to be the only scoring of the match.
Pflasterer made one save on the night for the Big Red, while Yale goalkeeper Bobby Thalman stopped a pair of shots in recording the shutout. Both teams recorded 12 shots on the night, with only two apiece finding their way onto the goal frame.
The game did feature the largest crowd ever at Berman Field, with 961 fans in attendance. That number far surpassed the previous record of 876, set on Oct. 20, 2001, against Brown, and marked the fourth time that the Big Red has drawn more than 800 fans to a game at Berman Field.
Additionally, the Big Red welcomed back a pair of former players, Kurt Bettger and Eric Kusseluk, who were inducted into the Cornell Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday night.
The Big Red returns to action on Tuesday, closing out the non-conference portion of the season with a trip to Lafayette. Tuesday's contest begins at 7 p.m. in Easton, Pa.
