Men's Squash Opens Season With 2-1 Mark

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's squash team opened up the 2010-11 season with a 2-1 mark over the weekend, earning victories against Franklin & Marshall and Penn before dropping a hard-fought contest to Princeton on Sunday.

The Big Red opened the weekend's action at Franklin & Marshall on Friday, scoring a 5-4 victory over the Diplomats. Thomas Spettigue claimed the clinching victory at No. 3, earning a 5-11, 11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6 victory over Mauricio Munez Sedano. Other winners against F&M were Alexander Domenick (No. 2), David Hilton (No. 5), Rishi Jalan (No. 6) and Steven Peever (No. 9), with Domenick, Jalan and Peever all winning in straight sets.

On Saturday at Penn, Cornell dominated the top half of the lineup, winning at each of the first four spots in the order en route to a 5-4 win over the Quakers. Nicholas Sachvie, Alexander Domenick, Thomas Spettigue and Arjun Gupta claimed wins at one through four, respectively, while Jalan claimed a win at No. 6 to secure the win for the Big Red.

The winning streak came to an end on Sunday at Princeton, though, as the Tigers scored a 6-3 win over Cornell. Spettigue and Jalan remained unbeaten on the weekend with wins at No. 3 and No. 6, respectively, while Owen Butler scored his first victory of the season with a hard-fought, five-set win at No. 7.

The Big Red returns to action on Sat., Dec. 4, when it battles Harvard at the Belkin International Squash Courts in Ithaca.
