THE MATCHUP – The Cornell men's tennis team has a busy weekend on tap as it welcomes George Washington this Friday, Feb. 26 to the Reis Tennis Center at 2:00 p.m., before travelling to University Park, Pa. to take on Penn State on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 12:00 p.m. Cornell (5-2) will look to extend its current three-match winning streak, but the Colonials (1-2) and the Nittany Lions (5-1) are also coming off victories in their last outings.
THE SERIES VS. GEORGE WASHINGTON – Cornell and George Washington have met nine times in men's tennis history with the Big Red keeping the 5-4 advantage even after a loss in its last meeting with Colonials. The series was slated to begin in 1941, but the match was cancelled due to snow. The teams finally faced each other for the first time in 1947 and Cornell opened its lead in the series with a 9-0 victory.
SCOUTING THE COLONIALS – So far this season, three of George Washington's six matches have been either postponed or cancelled due to snow. Last weekend, the Colonials lost their match at Maryland. Though they lost all three doubles matches, junior Yan Levinski captured the only victory for the Colonials at No. 3 singles.
LAST TIME VS. GEORGE WASHINGTON – The Big Red fell to George Washington, 6-1 at the Reis Tennis Center on Feb. 25, 1996. Peter Stahl picked up Cornell's lone win at the No. 6 spot.
THE SERIES VS. PENN STATE – Cornell and the Nittany Lions have met 32 times with the Big Red owning a 24-8 lead in the series, despite the fact that Penn State took a 6-1 victory in their last meeting. The two teams first met in 1926 at University Park, Pa., where the Big Red took its lead in the series with a 9-0 victory.
SCOUTING THE NITTANY LIONS – Last weekend, the Nittany Lions picked up three wins in matches against Buffalo, St. Bonaventure, and Bucknell. Against the Bulls, they swept the doubles and only lost in the No. 3 singles match. On Sunday against St. Bonaventure and Bucknell, Penn State swept both matches.
LAST TIME VS. PENN STATE – The Big Red took a 6-1 loss to Penn State at the Sarni Tennis Center on Feb. 9, 2008. Cornell's lone win came from Jon Jaklitsch, who defeated Take Toole at the No. 5 position.
LAST TIME OUT FOR CORNELL – This past weekend, the Big Red swept both matches on Saturday, Feb. 20 against Buffalo (4-3) and Fairleigh Dickinson (5-2). Cornell won the No. 2 and No. 3 position in the doubles matches against Buffalo. Against Fairleigh Dickinson, Jon Jaklitsch and
Mirza Klis took an 8-5 victory in the No. 1 doubles match. Jaklitsch continued to win at the No. 1 singles match as well as
Andy Gauthier in the No. 2 spot.
