ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red field hockey team hit its first speed bump of the season, falling to Bucknell this afternoon, 3-0, at Graham Field in Lewisburg, Pa. The Bison raced out to a three-goal advantage in the first half and Cornell was unable to comeback, despite outshooting the home team, 8-3, in the final stanza.
Bucknell (1-4) wasted little time in getting on the board, scoring in just the third minute of the contest as Rachel Misko capitalized from a scramble following a penalty corner. Just over 10 minutes later, Kelly Bruvik tallied an empty-net goal to make it a 2-0 game. The Bison scored the final goal of the contest in the waning moments of the first half when Christine Weiss converted a penalty corner off a direct shot to account for the 3-0 final.
Cornell (2-1) had several chances in the opening moments of the second half, but Bucknell's Sarah Zargarpour saved a shot from
Catie De Stio before benefitting from a hit post just moments later to preserve the clean sheet. Zagarpour was forced to make four of her total six saves in the second half.
For the game, the Big Red had twice as many shots as Bucknell (14-7), but both teams took five penalty corners.
Alex Botte stopped two shots en route to her first loss of the season.
The Big Red is back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 12, as it takes on Saint Joseph's at Drexel's Vidas Athletics Complex in Philadelphia, Pa.
