Bonus Points Lead Wrestling Past Missouri, 18-15

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—
The No. 1 Big Red wrestling team advanced to the semifinals of the National Duals with an 18-15 win over No. 13 Missouri on Saturday afternoon at the UNI Dome. The dual proved to be a nail-biter with each team winning five bouts. Steve Bosak's win by technical fall at 184 pounds and Mack Lewnes major decision at 174 clinched the victory for Cornell. Kyle Dake (149), DJ Meagher (157) and Justin Kerber (165) also picked up wins in their respective weight classes. The Big Red improved to 3-0, while Missouri moved to 9-5.

No. 14 Frank Perrelli and No. 5 Alan Waters were scoreless after the first period at 125. Waters chose down to start the second, and in 15 seconds, got his escape. With five seconds left in the period, Waters took a 3-0 victory with a takedown at the edge of the mat. Perrelli chose to start the third at neutral looking to score. Neither wrestler would score, and Waters won a 3-0 decision.

Joe Stanzione faced off against No. 19 Nathan McCormick at 133. Midway through the first period, McCormick took down Stanzione and rode him out for the remainder of the period. McCormick chose down in the second, and with an escape and another takedown held a 5-0 advantage. Stanzione started the third period down on the mat but was unable to escape. With 4:37 in riding time, McCormick won a 6-0 decision.

At 141 pounds, freshman Mike Nevinger faced No. 11 Todd Schavrien. Schavrien notched a takedown 1:45 into the first. After a stalemate the action came back to center, and Nevinger earned an escape. Schavrien chose down to start the second, and after 45 seconds, earned two more points with a reversal. Nevinger was unable to escape from his opening down position to start the third, and with 3:26 in riding time Schavrien won a 5-1 decision.

Missouri held a 9-0 lead heading into the bout at 149 pounds. No. 2 Dake faced No. 19 Kyle Bradley. Dake held a 4-1 lead after the first period with two takedowns. Dake reversed his opponent from his starting down position in the second and rode Bradley out for the remainder of the period. Dake let Bradley up from his starting down position in the third period looking to score bonus points for the Big Red. Dake notched another takedown and let Bradley up again. The two wrestlers scrambled and were tangled up for the remaining 40 seconds with neither being able to earn a takedown. With 1:49 in riding time, Dake won a 9-3 decision.

At 157 pounds, No. 10 Meagher took on Giorgio Gregoris. Twenty seconds into the bout, Meagher earned a takedown. With two seconds left in the period, Gregoris came within a point with an escape. Meagher chose down to start the second and reversed his opponent. He cut Gregoris free and earned another takedown. Meagher let Gregoris up from his starting down position to bring the score to 6-4 in the third period. Gregoris earned his first offensive points of the bout with a takedown with 1:10 left on the clock to tie the match. With riding time locked up for Meagher, Gregoris cut him free. Gregoris notched a takedown with seven seconds left on the clock to take the lead, but with a second left Meagher escaped. With 2:40 in riding time, Meagher won a 9-8 decision.

No. 3 Kerber faced No. 11 Zach Toal at 165. Toal held a 2-1 lead after the first period with a takedown from which Kerber escaped. The Mizzou wrestler escaped from his starting down position in the second, but with a takedown Kerber tied the bout at 3-3. Kerber chose to start the third down and rolled out for an escape. The two wrestlers scrambled, but Kerber came out on top for a takedown. With 1:30 in riding time, Kerber won a 7-3 decision to tie the team score at 9-9.

No. 3 Lewnes held a 2-1 lead over No. 19 Patrick Wright after one period at 174 pounds. Lewnes chose to start the second period down and quickly escaped. Lewnes notched two more takedowns to grab a 7-2 advantage heading into the last period. The Big Red wrestler earned two back points from Wright's opening down position in the third. Wright escaped, but was hit with his second stall warning to give Lewnes another point. With a takedown and 2:07 in riding time, Lewnes won a 13-3 major decision. With the four team points, Cornell took a 13-9 lead.

At 184 pounds, No. 4 Bosak made quick work of No. 11 Mike Larson. Bosak grabbed a takedown 30 seconds into the bout and earned a three-point nearfall three times to take an 11-0 lead into the second. Larson chose to start the second at neutral, and Bosak notched another takedown. Bosak chose to start the third down on the mat and with a reversal won a 15-0 technical fall in 5:58.

Maciej Jochym faced No. 11 Brent Haynes at 197. Jochym took the lead with 45 seconds off the clock with a takedown. Haynes would escape to come within a point. Jochym chose neutral to start the second, but Haynes took him down to take a 3-2 lead. Haynes chose to start the third on top looking to turn Jochym. Jochym was hit with two stall warnings in the third period, and with 2:20 in riding time Haynes won a 4-2 decision.

Oney Snyder wrestled against No. 6 Dominque Bradley at heavyweight. Bradley held a 3-0 lead heading into the third period after a takedown in the first and an opening escape in the second period. Snyder chose to start the third on top. Bradley escaped and with riding time won a 5-0 decision.

Cornell will wrestle Minnesota in the semifinals at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday.
