PHILADELPHIA -- Revenge is always sweet, but the way Cornell earned revenge against Penn on Friday night will have the Quakers calling a dentist Saturday morning.

In the teams' meeting last year, Penn won in Ithaca thanks to a goal with 1:02 left on the clock. This year, in Philadelphia, Cornell sophomore striker Daniel Haber broke a scoreless tie with 1:37 remaining to lift the Big Red to a 1-0 win.

The Big Red (5-1-3, 1-0 Ivy) is now on an eight-game unbeaten streak and has not lost since the season opener against Niagara on Sept. 2. Cornell has not had an unbeaten streak this long since Nov. 12, 1995, and the team opened Ivy play with a win for the first time since 2005.

"This was a great soccer game by two quality teams. We managed the game well at the end," head coach Jaro Zawislan said. "That's how Ivy League games go. It just came down to a difference of one play, and it's a miniscule difference of one play in the Ivy League. Penn played a great game and is a talented opponent."

Cornell is also four games over .500 for the first time sine Oct. 15, 1999, and the team's five wins this season is one more than it accrued all of last year. Zawislan now holds a career winning percentage of .500 (15-15-13).

The night opened with Cornell as a slight underdog, as Penn (5-3-1, 0-1 Ivy) was ranked No. 8 in the Northeast Region in this week's NSCAA poll while the Big Red was No. 9. Penn is also the only Ivy League team to be receiving votes in the NSCAA national poll, is No. 29 nationally according to TopDrawerSoccer.com and is receiving votes in the SoccerTimes.com poll.

Both teams took 13 shots in the match, and the contest was evenly contested for 88 minutes. But in the 89th, senior captain Jimmy Lannon took a throw-in from the left side that took a bounce off two Penn players and landed at Haber's feet.

Haber, for the team-leading fourth time this season, buried the ball in the back of the net when he took a shot from the edge of the right side of the penalty box.

"Our guys really came through at the end with a great play and an exceptional strike by Daniel," Zawislan said. "As good of a goal as it was by Daniel, the final outcome of the game was the result of a complete effort by the team on both sides of the ball."

Cornell snapped a five-game streak without a win against Penn, and the team earned its fifth shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Rick Pflasterer made three saves and earned his fourth shutout.

Cornell returns to action on Saturday when it plays host to Harvard at 4 p.m.
