Virginia Snaps Women's Polo Win Streak

10/22/2011 8:50:00 AM

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- In a rematch of the 2011 national championship game, the Virginia Cavaliers used its experience to jump out quickly on a young Cornel lteam and never looked back, topping the Big Red 19-9 on Friday evening. Kailey Eldredge scored a team-high six goals as Cornell had its 23-game win streak snapped by its rival.

Facing its first true test of the season, the starting unit of Eldredge, Ali Hoffman and Brittany Cox fell behind early as Cornell missed several opportunities. The experienced UVa squad had no such problem and came out ahead 6-1 after the first chukker. The second saw more of the same as Virginia extended its lead to 12-2 at the half. Maddy Olberg replaced Cox and Cornell started to show some life at the end of the third and put a few pieces together to score a couple of late goals, but still ended the third trailing 17-4. The fourth saw the Big Red put together its best chukker as it started to control more of the play. Though tired, Cornell actually performed well and won the fourth 5-2 to make the final 19-9. Eldredge scored six goals with Hoffman, Olberg and the horses each getting one apiece.

The Big Red will attempt to bounce back and start a new win streak when it faces Garrison on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Oxley Equestrian Center.
