PRINCETON, N.J. – Cornell came from behind to tie defending Ivy League champion Princeton 1-1 on Sunday afternoon, extending its unbeaten streak to a school-record 13 games and moving back atop the conference standings.
The Big Red (8-1-5, 3-0-2 Ivy League) now have 11 points in conference play and is one point ahead of second-place Brown and Dartmouth. Columbia (9 points) defeated Yale later in the day to also create a two-way tie between the teams for fourth place. All told, the top five teams in the league are separated by just two points with two games remaining.
Things looked bleak in the first half when defender
Peter Chodas accidentally tipped a cross from Princeton's Cameron Porter into the Cornell net as the Big Red conceded an own goal for the first time all year. The Princeton goal was also the first time since Oct. 8 against Harvard that Cornell's opponent scored first in a game.
But in the 40th minute, the Big Red evened the score. Sophomore
Daniel Haber took the ball, beat a defender and fired a low shot that beat Princeton goalie Seth MacMillan to tie the game at 1-1. Haber's goal put him at 20 points (eight goals, four assists) on the season, which is now the best total in the Ivy League and the most points for a Cornell player since Matt Bouraee had 22 in 2007.
The final 70 minutes of the game saw Cornell control most of the play, and at the end of the contest the Big Red had outshot the Tigers 15-5 throughout the game and had a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Cornell took three shots in overtime but none of them went into the net, and the final whistle blew for a tie.
Sunday's game was played a day late after snow in the northeast caused Saturday's scheduled 4 p.m. kickoff to be postponed.
The Big Red gets this week off before returning to action at Dartmouth on Saturday in a game with huge implications for the Ivy League championship. The team then concludes its regular season on Nov. 12 with a 7 p.m. home match against Columbia.
