POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The women's soccer team took advantage of a goal early in the second half to win its first game of the season on Wednesday, but then the Big Red fell victim to a similar scenario on Friday night.

Marist's Amanda Epstein scored two goals, including one just 44 seconds into the second half, to lead the host squad to a 2-0 victory over Cornell in the first day of the Red Fox Invitational. The Big Red falls to 1-5 on the season.

The winning goal was set up by a free kick following the issuance of a yellow card to Cornell senior defender Abageal Vonderweidt. Rycke Guiney drove the restart from 40 yards toward goal, where Epstein got a head to it and directed the ball into the net. Epstein doubled Marist's lead 20 minutes later off a cross from Jessica Arabia.

Senior goalkeeper Kelly Murphy, making her fifth start of the season, made four saves in the loss. Cornell fired three shots on goal -- two from senior co-captain Abigail Apistolas and another by Annmarie Irwin with seconds left in the contest.

The Big Red continues play at the Red Fox Invitational at noon on Sunday, Sept. 18, when it takes on regionally ranked Hartford. The Hawks improved to 6-0-1 on the season with a 1-0 victory over Lafayette in the event's opener on Friday afternoon.
