NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Junior forward
Maneesha Chitanvis scored two first-half goals, then set up senior
Brook Chang for a second-half tally, but the women's soccer team fell victim to Fordham's 4-3 overtime victory on Friday night.
The result spoiled a sterling offensive effort for the Big Red in its season debut. Cornell held a 3-1 lead with 18 minutes remaining in the second half before the Rams forced overtime with two goals five minutes apart, leading to Kristina Maksuti's winner 1 minute, 41 seconds into the extra frame.
Chitanvis got the Big Red on the board just 16 seconds into the game, forcing a turnover from Fordham's central defender before slashing toward goal and calmly sliding a shot inside the left post.
But Cornell's leading scorer from a season ago wasn't done. After Fordham tied the game at 1 in the fourth minute, Chitanvis put the Big Red back on top with 29:36 left in the first half.
Annmarie Irwin took a short corner to Chang. Her attempted cross was blocked, but the Big Red regained possession and set up Irwin's shot from 25 yards out on the left side. Fordham goalie Sarah Zieman stopped the shot while sliding to her left, but Chitanvis alertly tapped in the rebound.
Senior goalie
Kelly Murphy kept the Big Red in front with a diving save early in the second half, then Maksuti's chip shot a couple minutes later skirted wide of the right post. Murphy finished the night with four saves.
The Big Red then took a two-goal lead in the 61st minute. Fordham goalie Rachel Suther, who replaced Zieman at halftime, punted a ball toward midfield. Cornell won possession, and Chitanvis sent a perfect through-ball up the right side to send Chang behind the Rams' defense. Chang then chipped a shot over the 6-foot-2 Suther that banked in off the left post.
Even with a two-goal lead, the Big Red was behind territorially for the majority of the night. The Rams finally started to cash in its chances late in the second half. Fordham (1-2-1) cut the Big Red's lead in half with a scramble off a corner kick in the 72nd minute, then tied the game on a penalty kick about five minutes later.
Cornell (0-1) takes on No. 3 Maryland in its home opener at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 4 at Berman Field.
