ABOUT THE BIG RED
With the non-conference schedule behind it, the Big Red now focuses on continuing its unbeaten run through the Ivy League. Cornell claimed a 3-1 victory against Colgate on Tuesday night to move to 11-0 on the year, and the team is now the No. 16 squad in the country.
Conor Goepel,
Daniel Haber and
Nico Nissl scored in Hamilton against the Raiders, and
Rick Pflasterer made three saves for the team's program-record-tying 11th consecutive victory. Cornell has not earned 11 wins in a season since 1999.
HEAD COACH JARO ZAWISLAN
Now in his fourth year with the Big Red program,
Jaro Zawislan has unquestionably put his stamp on the team. With a stifling defense and an aggressive offense, Zawislan has transformed what was a 1-15 team before his arrival into an 8-2-6 team in 2011 and a potential contender for the Ivy League title in 2012. Zawislan, a native of Poland, holds a 29-16-15 record during his time in Ithaca. He played soccer for four years at Clemson and then spent time professionally in the United States and Poland.
ABOUT YALE
The Bulldogs, based in New Haven, Conn., hold a 3-5-3 record and a 0-1-1 mark in the Ivy League as they come to Ithaca on Saturday. Yale has scored a conference-low five goals all season and is the only Ivy League team yet to score in a conference game. Yale went four full games before scoring its first goal of the year and has not scored since a 2-1 victory against Marist on Sept. 23. Five different players have earned a goal for the Bulldogs, while six different players have an assist each. The Yale defense is stronger than its offense, giving up just nine goals in its 11 games, equaling Cornell for the second-best mark in the league. Goalie Bobby Thalman has a 0.81 goals against average and 51 saves on the season.
Yale is coached by Brian Tompkins, now in his 17th year leading the team.
THE SERIES WITH YALE
Cornell and Yale have been competing in men's soccer since 1908, a long-standing rivalry that has seen the Bulldogs come away with 45 victories to Cornell's 23. The Big Red, though, claimed last season's contest by a 2-0 margin thanks to goals from
Tyler Regan and
Daniel Haber just six minutes apart in the first half. Before 2011, Yale won three games in a row against Cornell.
A WIN AGAINST YALE WOULD…
… break the 1995 team's school record for consecutive victories (12)…increase the season total to 12 victories for the first time since 1996…increase the school record for consecutive games with a goal to 28…be Cornell's second straight win over the Bulldogs…start Ivy League play 3-0-0 for the second consecutive year…give
Jaro Zawislan his 30th career victory.
BREAK THE BERMAN RECORD
Saturday's contest is the team's annual attempt to break the attendance record at Berman Field. The record was set last season at 983, and Cornell will be going for 1,000 this year. If the team reaches 1,000 fans in attendance, everyone will get a free Big Red Burger and Fries from the Boatyard Grill. The first 200 students will also get a “Break the Berman Record” T-shirt.
FLAWLESS NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
With its victory against Colgate on Tuesday night, the Big Red finished its non-conference slate with a perfect 9-0-0 record. The Big Red had not been undefeated in non-conference competition since the 1983 season when it went 6-0-2. Cornell had not gone unblemished in non-conference games since 1965, when the team was just 4-0-0. In 1957, Cornell was also 3-0-0 in non-Ivy games.
OFFENSIVE SEASON
The Big Red is up to 32 goals on the year, a number that surpassed 2011's total of 25 goals last week. Cornell has not scored this many goals in a season since the 1996 campaign when it totaled 37 goals. The Big Red would equal that mark with five more goals on the year. The school record for goals in a year belongs to the 1972 squad's 43. The Big Red would need to average 2.2 goals per game to reach that total by the end of the regular season.
LAST WEEK IN THE IVY LEAGUE
Cornell was again the highest-scoring team in the Ivy League last week with its three goals against Harvard. Elsewhere around the Ancient Eight, Columbia defeated Penn 1-0, Dartmouth knocked off Yale 1-0 and Princeton and Brown played to a 1-1 draw. Cornell currently stands in first place in the league with six points, two ahead of Brown and Princeton.
COMEBACK KIDS
Cornell has trailed four times this season, all by 1-0 deficits in the first half. All four times, though, the Big Red has managed to come from behind for the victory. Down 1-0 at halftime against Wofford on Sept. 16, Cornell went on to win 2-1. Trailing 1-0 at halftime against Saint Joseph's on Sept. 22, the Big Red scored twice in four minutes to open the second half and eventually win 3-2. Behind 1-0 just 21 seconds into the Hartwick game on Sept. 25, Cornell came back for a 4-1 victory. Finally, against Penn on Sept. 29, Cornell was down 1-0 and scored three consecutive goals in 10 minutes on its way to a 3-2 victory.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Through six weeks of the season, Cornell has had the Ivy League Player of the Week four times.
Daniel Haber earned the honor after weeks one, two and four. More recently,
Tyler Regan picked up Player of the Week honors after week five.
NATIONALLY RANKED
After reaching double digit wins and no losses, Cornell continues to move up national rankings in every poll. The Big Red is now No. 16 in the NSCAA Coaches' Poll, up from No. 18 last week. This is the Big Red's highest ranking since 1996, when it was as high as No. 15 during the year. Soccer America has Cornell the country's No. 16 team one week after it was No. 22. Cornell jumped five spots in College Soccer News' rankings, up to No. 18 from No. 23. SoccerTimes.com has Cornell in the rankings again as well, moving up to No. 19 from its No. 23 place last week. And for the first time all season, the Big Red is now in Top Drawer Soccer's projected 48 teams for the NCAA Tournament at No. 30.
AMONG THE UNBLEMISHED
Cornell is one of just two teams remaining in the country that have not lost or tied a game yet. Besides the Big Red, Marquette is still unblemished at 12-0-0 and 3-0-0 in Big East play.
MULTI-GOAL GAMES
Before the 2012 season, no Cornell player had scored more than one goal in a game since 2008. This year, junior
Daniel Haber already has five multi-goal games. He scored twice at Loyola Marymount on Sept. 2, three times against Buffalo on Sept. 9, two times at Binghamton last Wednesday, twice against Saint Joseph's on Sept. 22 and twice against Hartwick on Sept. 25. His 14 goals on the year have already bested his 2011 total by four.
RECORD BROKEN
With
Peter Chodas' goal at Binghamton, the Big Red officially broke a Cornell record that stood for 41 seasons. The 1970 and 1971 teams had combined for 21 consecutive contests with a goal. Chodas' score, though, made 22 straight games for the Big Red with a goal dating back to the 2011 season opener. The record can move to 28 on Saturday.
NATIONAL STATISTICS
Cornell continues to rank high up in the country in multiple statistical categories as of Monday. Cornell moved up from fourth to second in the nation in scoring offense (2.9 goals per game). Cornell is also fourth in total goals (29), 34th in goals against average (0.80), eighth in total assists (26) and fourth in total points (84).
