Box Score UNIVERSITY PARK, Md. – The Big Red field hockey team used some balanced offense and solid defense to defeat Georgetown, 3-1, this evening at the University of Maryland's Field Hockey Complex in University Park, Md. With the win, its fourth consecutive, Cornell improves to 5-6 on the season.
Three Big Red players found the back of the net, with
Marisa Siergiej registering one goal and one assist.
Brittany Thompson and
Hannah Balleza each scored once and
Taylor Standiford tallied one helper. In goal,
Carolyn Horner made four saves to even her record to 5-5 on the season.
Georgetown (2-12) held the edge in shots, 11-8, while the Big Red had a slim 6-5 advantage in penalty corners. For the second consecutive game, Cornell's penalty corner unit proved to be the difference, scoring twice on its six chances.
After Thompson got the visitors on the board just 28 seconds into the game with a breakaway goal, Cornell found itself in a 1-1 contest after Annie Wilson knotted the game by scoring off a rebound in the 15th minute.
Balleza put the Big Red up, 2-1, just before the half, scoring off a penalty corner with the assist being credited to Siergiej.
Siergiej then tacked on a late insurance goal in the waning moments of the contest to account for the 3-1 final.
The Big Red returns to Ivy League action next weekend as it travels to Harvard for a contest on Saturday, Oct. 13 at noon, before returning to Ithaca to take on Davidson on Monday, Oct. 15 at 4 p.m.
